MADISON (WKOW) -- Community members and victims' advocates gathered on the city's east side Thursday for a candlelight vigil to remember three young boys. Investigators say all three were victims of child abuse.
Three-year-old Luis Vasquez died July 3 from severe head trauma after police say his mother struck him. The force of the blow sent his head into a wall.
Kemaury, 3, and Kevin McCarthur, 4, were found dead inside a car on July 6. Investigators haven't released the exact cause of the brothers' deaths, but say they were victims of "homicidal violence."
"The purpose of this event is to transform our sadness and frustration into something that is positive by educating ourselves on the many resources available here Madison that assist individuals who are victims of domestic violence and child abuse," said organizer Jessica Strong.
"We hope to begin the healing process and bring closure to family members, friends and community members who have all been affected by this tragic turn of events."
The Urban League of Greater Madison has set up a memorial fund for the McCarthur brothers at Summit Credit Union.
