MADISON (WKOW) -- The new school year is just weeks away and for the 18th year, the Vogul Foundation is collecting donations for the "School Supplies for Kids" program.
But this year they need your help. The coordinator says the need is up 9 percent compared to last year and funding is down 13 percent.
"No child should be limited in what they can achieve by not being able to afford these basic supplies," said David Vogel, President of the Foundation. "It is extremely important that we invest in our future by helping support these kids in need."
So far, they have bought $40,000 worth of basic back to school supplies. Every year they distribute the supplies to at-need children in 151 Dane County schools.
RoJeane Anderson is the coordinator for the "School Supplies for Kids" program. She says, "We go out on a wing and prayer and purchase the supplies ahead of time hoping we're going to collect and we make up the difference that's not collected.
Anderson says so far they've only collected $20,000. Shopko sells the foundation the items in bulk at a discounted price.
Tax deductible contributions can be made to Madison Urban Ministry (School Supplies) and mailed to David Vogel at PO Box 7696, Madison, WI 53707-7696.
