UW-Madison meeting on 'threat to diversity efforts'

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) – UW-Madison officials organized what they called an urgent meeting Monday night with students to discuss "a threat to the school's diversity efforts."

This is all in response to a report that will be released Tuesday from the Center for Equal Opportunity, a conservative think tank.

Lori Berquam, Dean of Students, and Dr. Damon Williams, Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer, told students it challenges the integrity of the school's mission.

They say the report accuses UW-Madison of giving unfair preference to minorities over whites and Asians when choosing from prospective students.

Officials say the group's goal is basically to abolish affirmative action.

"These organizations put as their mission to systematically dial back the work gained from the civil rights era," Williams said.

The school has not released an official response, but Berquam and Williams say they wanted to make students aware of what is going on so they are not blind sided Tuesday.

Students are already organizing a press conference to challenge the group's report.

The Center for Equal Opportunity embargoed this information until Tuesday.

They will have a press conference at 11 a.m. to announce the study results

That coincides with a debate at the Law School Tuesday over affirmative action.

School officials say a UW faculty member agreed to debate with the study group's president Roger Clegg without knowing the organization would be releasing a study against the university on the same day.
