Three survive shooting near troubled bar

MADISON (WKOW) -- Authorities said three people were wounded in a bar time shooting Friday on South Park Street,  as neighbors again raised concerns over a episode of violence's proximity to a troubled bar.

"It's troubling for a neighborhood when you witness violence like this,"   neighbor Kevin McGettigan said.

"It never was happening before the bar came."

Authorities said a hail of gunfire erupted in the 1800 block of South Park Street near an SUV.   The bar,  R Place on Park is in the 1800 block.

Madison police spokesperson Joel DeSpain said it is not known if the victims  -  three men ranging in age from 26 to 37 --  were patrons of R Place.   DeSpain said the shooting was not random and the victims were targeted.   Authorities said all the victims will survive their injuries.

R Place on Park co-owner Annie Weatherby-Flowers said the shooting was a symptom of growing city-wide violence,  and not a reflection on her establishment.   Members of the city's alcohol license and review committee have threatened to shut down R Place on Park over crime problems associated with the bar.     Weatherby-Flowers said the bar's patrons are largely African-American and the owners have brought a federal lawsuit over alleged discrimination in enforcement of city regulations against R Place on Park.

"To focus on R Place on Park,  it is unfair, "   Weatherby-Flowers said.

"This is something Chief Wray and the Madison police department needs to address city-wide."

Authorities continue to look for the gunman or gunmen involved in Friday's shooting.

Three people were shot on S. Park St. around 2:30 a.m. Friday. All three were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say a vehicle and buildings were damaged in the shooting.
