WKOW 27: Madison, WI Breaking News, Weather and SportsAssembly Speaker Fitzgerald to run for US Senate

MADISON (WKOW) -- State Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald says he's running for U.S. Senate.

The Senate seat is being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Fitzgerald said that he wasn't worried about facing Republican stalwart former Gov. Tommy Thompson, who is also running.

Fitzgerald, Thompson and former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann make up the candidates in the Republican field.

U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin is the only Democratic candidate who has entered the race.
