Drivers should be extra cautious during Halloween

MADISON (WKOW) -- In just a few days, families will be out and about Trick-or-Treating, and Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney is reminding drivers to be extra careful when on the streets in the next week.

Driving can be dangerous, as many little monsters are out after dark, full of excitement for Halloween festivities.

That's why the Sheriff's Office is spreading awareness of safety, with a few tips:

  • Slow down. Drive 5 mph below the posted speed limit, as Trick-or-Treaters may dart into the street unexpectedly.
  • Drive with your headlights on even in the daylight hours, to make your vehicle more visible.
  • Don't pass other vehicles on the road. They may be slowing down for pedestrians, or dropping off or picking up.
  • Stay alert. Never use your cell phone, navigation system, or other devices while behind the wheel.
  • Never drink and drive. Plan ahead with a designated driver.

Deputies will be spreading awareness about safety to children too. They'll stop at Black Earth Elementary on Monday with McGruff the Crime Dog, to talk with kids about how they can stay safe when they go out trick-or-treating.
