MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Children's Museum has earned a national honor.
The museum received the 2011 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The Institute of Museum and Library Services chooses five museums and five libraries for the award each year.
Madison Children's Museum is the first Wisconsin museum to receive the award.
"This particular award is especially meaningful because it speaks to the personal difference that we make in people's lives," said Ruth Shelly, executive director of the Madison Children's Museum.
The award comes with $10,000. Museum officials say the money will be used to offer reduced admission to people in need.
