Trick or treating for a good cause

UNDATED (WKOW) -- Erin Nolden and her friends are going trick or treating like they do every year.

They are looking to fill up more than just a bag—they've got a wagon.

That is because they are not collecting candy like most kids on Halloween.

Canned goods are the treat—donations for the Middleton Outreach Ministry Food Pantry.

"It is really important because there is so much need," Nolden said. "Everybody needs to be fed so being able to give back... it is just a really great opportunity to do it."

As vice president for the Middleton High School Key Club, Nolden helps organize these collections in nine different neighborhoods.

She says they collected more than 4,000 pounds last year.

"It only lasted two weeks," Nolden said. "So even though it was a great amount, it does not last as long as people might think it does."

In one Middleton home, they are bringing the trick or treaters to them.

In return for the Halloween horror in their haunted garage, they are also collecting donations.

"I think we made 150 flyers and passed them out in our neighborhood and surrounding streets," Evan Bauch said.

They got 500 pounds of donations last year. They are aiming for 600 pounds this time.

The nonprofit group, MOM, says it gave out 63,000 pounds of food, feeding nearly 3,500 people all just in September.

Volunteers collecting donations are hoping this Halloween will do something to help meet that need.
