Democrats raise questions over recent petition to recall Governor Walker

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The first papers to recall the governor were filed Friday. Democratic leaders are calling it a charade to give the governor more time to raise unlimited amounts of cash.

David Brandt of Muskego, and the "Close Friends to Recall Walker" filed the petition Friday.

While signatures are being collected, the governor has no cap to the amount of money he can collect. During normal gubernatorial elections, a contributor can't give more than $10,000.

It was legal for Mr. Brandt to have filed recall papers November 4th. The state only requires you to wait a year after a governor is elected, before you can file.

He now has 60 days to collect 540,000 signatures to force a recall.

There's one section he checked off on the petition, leaving some people wondering.

"The petition that was filed Friday checked the box that said they would not spend as much as $1,000. Well a recall election costs far more than $1,000," said UW Political Science Professor Charles Franklin.

"Governor Walker has been doing dirty campaigning since he was in college so this is more Walker/Republican dirty tricks," said Representative Bret Hulsey, (D) Madison.

"In the context of a 6 month campaign period, another 11 days for fundraising really doesn't matter," said Brian Schimming, Republican Party of Wisconsin Vice Chair.

Our Milwaukee affiliate WISN tried to track Mr. Brandt down at his home Friday. His wife would only say he is on a 4-day hunting trip. 27 News also left a message at his home Saturday. He did not return our call.

Democratic Party Wisconsin will continue their plan to file their petition to recall Governor Walker on the 15th.

That filing will trigger another 60 day window to recall the governor.
