Wisconsin men's hockey team's two late goals spark 3-3 tie

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Two goals in the final five minutes propelled the Wisconsin men's hockey team to a comeback tie Saturday night, giving the Badgers their first road point of the season.

Down 3-1 late in the third period, two power play goals lifted the Badgers to a split with the Huskies in St. Cloud.

The tie led the Badgers (4-5-1, 2-3-1 WCHA) to redemption after a 7-2 defeat the evening before against the Huskies (4-4-2, 2-1-1 WCHA).

In a game that had been dominating by the Huskies for the first 55 minutes, momentum shifted to the Badgers in the final five minutes. Down 3-1 with 4:19 left in the game and 2:31 into a five-minute power play, Matt Paape scored to put Wisconsin down just one

With 1:42 left in the game, St. Cloud State committed its seventh penalty of the game. With just 40 seconds left and goalie Joel Rumpel (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) out for the sixth attacker, Schultz netted his second goal of the night with a sniper shot from the circle to tie the game at 3-3.

Sophomores Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) and Tyler Barnes (Eagan, Minn.) assisted on the shot.

Both teams showed energy in the overtime period, but neither team saw a opportunity on net and the evening closed as a 3-3 tie.
