WAUNAKEE (WKOW) – Waunakee High School solidified its reputation as a Wisconsin football powerhouse with a resounding 45-0 win over Waterford Friday.
It was an emotional night for the Waunakee football team. The players had their last game of the season, and for some, their last game at Waunakee.
"It just sucks that it is over because we all came here and put our hearts into it, and we came out here and won a state championship," said runningback Leo Musso.
Musso set a Division II record with four rushing touchdowns.
"The team broke the record," he said. "It is the team's record."
"This is my last year," said quarterback Hunter Darger. "We're going out with a bang. We never lost a game in high school. I'm proud to say that."
On top of its third straight Division II State Championship title, the football team has a 36-game winning streak. They have won every home game for the last 14 years.
"You cannot put it into words," Darger said. "There are no words to describe this feeling."
People filled the stands to celebrate with a pep rally at the high school fieldhouse.
Afterwards, devoted fans waited outside the locker room to get autographs.
Brycen Grabarski and Lucas Greiber say they are "really big" fans.
"I knew they were going to win," Greiber said.
"I could not be happier that we won, but I am just sad it is over," Musso said. "I am never going to take the field with these same fellas again."
Musso may be graduating, but as he and his teammates say, the tradition never graduates.
