Call for Action: Woman gets money back from contractor

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW)-- A Madison woman wasn't upset with the work of her contractor, but what she saw was a lack of courtesy.

So she reached out to 27 News Call for Action.

Kristin Scheeler paid a contractor $937 for roof work.

But she says he never showed, and never responded to her calls.

He did, however, respond to Call for Action.

It all started when Scheeler and her husband wanted more space for two year old Ethan, and his little sister on the way.

So they converted their porch into a four-season. Only afterward did they realize they needed to replace the roof over the room.

A family member recommended Hartland Company.

"He made the estimate really fast, was really friendly, came out fast and was probably the most competitive of the estimates," Scheeler said.

Scheeler says she was told they may not get to the job for three or four weeks, but after the fourth week, and no contact, she started to call.

"After at least two emails and two phone calls, I just started asking for my money back," Scheeler said.

She says by that point, it had been six to eight weeks.

Scheeler claims she finally heard from the owner, who told her they still wanted the job. and from the manager who made the estimate, who told her he had been sick.

"I understand that people get sick, but I also wanted them to at least call and say this thing has happened in our company," Scheeler said. "We are behind because of an unforeseen illness.'"

The manager told 27 News he did respond to Scheeler's emails and doesn't know why she didn't receive his replies.

Scheeler eventually dialed Call for Action, who contacted the contractor.

And she says within three weeks, Hartland had repaid the money she put down up front, even though the company had already purchased materials for the job.

The project manager confirmed to 27 News he was dealing with health issues -- chemotherapy for bladder cancer -- and admits its been a struggle to catch up on his work.

As for the roof, the Scheelers have yet to get it fixed.

But they have their $937 back to put toward the project.
