Supporters hope to get enough votes to start Madison Prep

MADISON (WKOW) -- The president of the non-partisan, non-profit Active Citizens for Education group is worried there won't be enough votes to start the Madison Preparatory Academy.

Don Severson is urging the Metropolitan Madison School District of Education to vote for the new charter school. Severson says the school would focus on helping minority, low achievers and at-risk students.

If the charter school is approved, 120 students would start next August at the former Mount Olive Lutheran Church on Mineral Point Road.

"We believe they will make a significant difference and helping target groups of students in terms of meeting personal and academic growth standards and be prepared for college or whatever choice they may want to make," Severson said.

If the Madison School Board doesn't approve the charter school, Severson says it will likely become a private school. That means the public school district would lose out on about $1.3 million in state aid.

The school board will vote on Monday.
