GREEN BAY, Wis. (WKOW) -- Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been named the 2011 Male Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press.

He was chosen because of his MVP performance during the Super Bowl last February and almost unbeaten 2011 season.

Rodgers received more than half of the votes from the AP's membership organizations.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander finished second.

Three quarterbacks have won the title in the past five years. The New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees won in 2010 and New England Patriot's Tom Brady won in 2007.
