MADISON (WKOW) – If you sign a recall petition multiple times or offer gifts in exchange for signatures, you could face a fine and jail time.
The Senate's elections committee approved the Republican bills on Thursday.
Under the first bill, if you knowingly sign a recall petition more than once, it would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to $1,000 in fines and six months in jail.
Under the second bill, if you offer someone anything of value to get someone to sign or not sign a recall petition, it would be a felony punishable up to $10,000 and 3.5 years in prison.
The Senate's elections committee voted 4-1 to approve the multiple signing penalty bill and 5-0 to approve the bill preventing people from offering gifts to sign or not to sign the petition.
