UPDATE: 22 state lawmakers ask US DOJ to review voter ID law

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Twenty two Democratic Wisconsin state lawmakers are asking the U.S. Department of Justice to review the state's new voter photo identification law.

In the letter sent Friday, Democrats argue that the law will suppress the right of minorities, senior citizens, students and the poor the right to vote.

Republicans who passed the law say it's designed to cut down on voter fraud, even though there have been few instances of that reported in Wisconsin.

A similar letter to Attorney General Eric Holder was sent in August by the chairwoman of the Wisconsin state Bar Association civil rights section.

A representative of the League of Women Voters also spoke in support of the letter at a news conference. The league has filed a lawsuit challenging the law.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Three legislators, along with the League of Women's Voters, will announce the release of a letter concerning the new voter identification law on Friday.

State Representatives Brett Hulsey (D-Madison) and Mark Pocan (D-Madison) and Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) are working with the league to send the letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. They are asking him to use his Voting Rights Act authority to ensure that Wisconsin's new voting law will not lead to voter suppression at the polls.

The announcement will come at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at the Capitol.
