Former Walker appointee pleads not guilty to theft

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A former Milwaukee County official is headed to trial for allegedly stealing from Wisconsin veterans and their families.

Court records show Kevin Kavanaugh pleaded not guilty to theft and fraud charges.  He waived his preliminary hearing and was bound over for trial.

Kavanaugh will be back in court January 30 for a scheduling conference.

Kavanaugh is charged in the John Doe investigation that also led to the arrest of former Walker aide Tim Russell and Russell's domestic partner Brian Pierick.

Russell, Walker's former deputy chief of staff in Milwaukee County, faces embezzlement charges related to a nonprofit Walker asked him to head.

Pierick faces child enticement charges.  Prosecutors say they found that evidence while looking through Russell's phones and computers.
