MADISON (WKOW) -- More than 24,000 signatures are being submitted to force a recall election of Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine).
Recall organizers are turning in the signatures Tuesday. They said they don't have an exact number yet because they're still counting.
They need at least 15,353 valid signatures to trigger a recall election. Recall organizers said at their current count, they have 156 percent of the required signatures.
Wanggaard told reporters Tuesday he has worked to balance the state budget without layoffs and a recall election could cost local governments in his district hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Government Accountability Board will be busy. Organizers are turning in petitions to recall Wanggaard, three other Republican senators, Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.
