Gov. Walker not doing TV interviews about recall as GOP prepares strategy

MADISON (WKOW) -

The Governor is not talking about his potential recall election opponents or anything else this week; at least not on Wisconsin television stations.

The Governor gave interviews to several state newspapers Wednesday.

But Tom Evenson, Gov. Walker's campaign media coordinator, told 27 News by email that the Governor is not doing interviews with any Wisconsin TV stations this week.

But both Walker's Lieutenant Governor and his political party did speak with 27 News, and they're already talking campaign strategy.

For the second consecutive day, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch was in Madison.

She spent the noon hour talking to the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association, a trucking trade group.

Lt. Gov. Kleefisch had no answers for us about her boss's sudden aversion to cameras.

"I don't know the Governor's schedule off the top of my head, but I know that I am here and excited to talk to you guys," smiled Kleefisch.

Despite 845,000 signatures to recall her from office, Lt. Gov. Kleefisch is confident both she and Gov. Walker will run successful campaigns.

"When you talk about a campaign, you want to focus on your own accomplishments and there is no doubt that we are going to be facing a stark contrast in whoever they decide to run against us," said Kleefisch.

"We're gonna talk about the fact that Governor Walker balanced a $3.6 billion budget deficit," added Stephan Thompson, Executive Director of the Republican Party of Wisconsin.

In fact, Thompson said volunteers across Wisconsin are already talking about that.

"Our offices opened up just after January 1st, so we have a dozen offices around the state right now and they've already been churning through those volunteer calls, turning in letters to the editor around the state, so that effort's already underway," said Thompson.

Thompson also refuted the idea that the Republican Party will try to delay an election as long as possible.

"We're confident, regardless of when this election happens, that we'll be victorious," said Thompson.

He's also confident Gov. Walker will win re-election, regardless of who ends up as the Democratic candidate.

"At the end of the day, I think what you're seeing out there is a laundry list of candidates that are yesterday's news," said Thompson.

Thompson went on to say that former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, who announced her candidacy on Wednesday, and Tom Barrett, the 2010 Democratic nominee for Governor, have both proven they simply cannot win statewide elections.
