CHARLESTON, S.C (WKOW) – For more than three decades, South Carolina has continued to raise the state's national political profile.
Since 1980, every GOP candidate who wins in South Carolina has become the Republican presidential nomination.
State party officials like to say the road to the White House passes straight through South Carolina.
South Carolina is different from the predominantly white New Hampshire and corn fields of Iowa. It is a poorer and more conservative state. It also has a population that is 28 percent black. Within the primary, the voters don't register by parties so Democrats and Independents join in the mix.
