MADISON (WKOW) -- Memorial Union's classic Der Rathskeller restaurant reopened Monday with a new menu and format.
New menu items include German specialties, fresh salads and family-style appetizers.
Dining Services director Carl Korz said the restaurant will use more fresh ingredients than before the transition.
The Rathskeller is moving away from fast food and toward a "fast-casual" concept.
"Everything is prepared hot and fresh for you. Instead of the frozen burgers we used to have, we now have a one-third-pound hand-patted fresh burger," Korz said.
Decreased sales and changes in customer preferences led to the changes, according to Korz.
