Evers wants Assembly to pass school voucher bill

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) – Tony Evers, the State Department of Public Instruction superintendent, wants the Assembly to pass a bill that would stop school voucher expansion.

Last summer, Governor Scott Walker's state budget laid out new qualifying criteria for vouchers based on a city's size, poverty levels and per-pupil spending. School districts across Milwaukee County and the City of Racine became eligible due the new standards.

Those opposed to the voucher are concerned that the language could qualify schools around the state. In October, the state Senate passed a bill in October that limited voucher participation to schools in the program when the measure takes effect.

Walker says he supports the legislation. However, a spokesman for Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, Horicon Republican, says Fitzgerald doesn't know if he has enough votes to pass it.
