MADISON (WKOW) --UW police says the staff member injured in the explosion at the UW Chemistry Building Monday morning is in stable condition.
Officials say the UW staff member is expected to be released from UW Hospital sometime late Monday. He was hurt in a small explosion on the sixth floor of the UW Chemistry Building.
UW-Madison safety officials are investigating the incident. With the exception of the lab where the explosion occurred, there are no closures within the Chemistry building.
MADISON (WKOW) -- UW police along with the UW Safety Department are investigating the cause of an explosion on campus.
In a release from the City of Madison Fire Department they explain the call for help along with the course of action:
The Madison Fire Department responded to the UW Madison Chemistry Building this morning for a person who was injured in an explosion. At 9:34 a.m. a full fire response was sent to the building at 1101 University Avenue.
Engine 4 arrived on scene first and made an assessment of the incident. They learned from UW staff that a small explosion occurred in a laboratory and one person was injured. Engine 4 and Medic 9 remained on scene, but the full fire response was cancelled. Paramedics treated the injured person for non-life threatening injuries and transported the patient to a local hospital.
The Hazardous Incident Team (HIT) was consulted by radio to gather more information on the material involved in the explosion and the related hazards.
MADISON (WKOW) -- One person was hurt after a small explosion inside a laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Chemistry Building.
UW police say the explosion occurred around 9:30 a.m. Monday on the sixth floor of the building.
UW-Madison spokesman John Lucas says a lab experiment ignited and broke a glass container holding chemicals. The injured person was cut by the glass.
There was no fire, and building was not evacuated. The streets were not closed. The only area that was closed was the room where the explosion occurred.
