A look inside Madison College's new stem cell lab

MADISON (WKOW) - More and more attention is being paid to stem cell research, and it's possibilities.

Because of this growing field, Madison College expanded its stem cell education program this year.

Leaders there believe stem cell research will soon be in high demand. In fact, this field is expected to make more than $8.5 billion in the U.S. by 2016.

That's why just last month, they opened a new 2,700 square foot facility.

The program director says more students can now enroll in their biotechnology programs.

The students at Madison College do not perform research, they are learning how to handle, grow and take care of both embryonic and adult stem cells. This shows the possibilities are endless, especially in regenerative medicine.

"Say someone's spinal cord is damaged in an accident they can be treated. Parkinson's is a major target for stem cells, macular degeneration, blindness," said Lisa Seidman, Madison College.

"I jumped at the opportunity to get actual stem cells and something unique to put on my resume that would set me apart from everybody else when I go out and join the workforce," said Erich Berndt, Madison College Student.

Erich Berndt is five months into the program.

The program director says she's confident that the expansion to get more students involved will also help grow the economy in the Madison area, where there are many research facilities doing this research right now.

We also reached out to Pro-Life Wisconsin. They sent us a statement, saying the pro-life community is for adult stem cell research. They do not believe in embryonic stem cell research at any facility, including at Madison College, because they believe it is immoral.
