Bielema: Waunakee kicker Jack Russell could start for Badgers

MADISON (WKOW) -- Nineteen players signed national letters of intent to play for the Badger football team, 12 on scholarship and seven preferred walk-ons.

Wisconsin recently extended scholarship offers to players like wide receiver Jared Abbrederis, who spent the last two years without any scholarship benefits.

And with fewer scholarships available, those walk-on players could become an important part of the future Badger football teams.

Kicker Jack Russell of Waunakee is one of those walk-on players from which head coach Bret Bielema expects big things.

"I think some of these guys will be guys 2-3 years from now that we're really talking about. I think Jack Russell has the ability to come in and compete for the kicking job right away, just because of pure numbers," said Bielema.

Russell, along with Waunakee's Leo Musso, signed their national letters of intent to play for Wisconsin. Musso was a star running back at Waunakee but will likely be a safety at UW.
