The University of Akron has hired former Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel to be its vice president for strategic engagement, at a base salary of $200,000 per year.
Tressel starts the job May 1.
University officials say he will be responsible for working with alumni, community organizations and friends of the school to develop strategies and efforts to help students succeed.
Akron President Luis Proenza issued a statement, saying Tressel will bring his energy, leadership, passion and compassion to the university.
Tressel was forced to resign last May amid a scandal at Ohio State.
He spent last season working with the Indianapolis Colts organization and interviewed with Colts' owner Jim Irsay about the team's head coaching position, but didn't get the job.
