MADISON (WKOW) - Radon levels in the Madison area are higher than that of the national average.
Nationally, radon levels are about 1.6 pci/liter. That is the unit used to measure the quantity of radiation in a given amount of air. Dane County comes in at about 4.6. That's nearly three times the national average.
Nearly, one in three homes in Dane County have screening levels above the EPA's recommended action level for radiation.
Owner of Radon, Inc., Dan Skelton says if he were to test every home for radon in Dane County he would find that about 60 percent would fail a test of 2.0 levels.
"People really need to realize this is a major danger," Skelton said. "We spend huge amounts of money on drinking and driving and they advertise constantly, yet radon is a very well kept secret that kills as many people as drunk drivers in our state."
Spending money on a mitigation system will happen after purchasing a home test kit and receiving the results.
A mitigation system could lower your home's radon levels to about 0.5 or 1.0.
