MADISON (WKOW) -  They say Darrell Ballweg was loved by many. Friends came to his doorstep Monday to lay down flowers and try to find answers.

Police say Ballweg, a beloved member of the deaf community, was shot and killed by a man he let stay at his house. Now, 24 year old Edgar Ivan Salinas-Leal is on the run. They say after the murder, he stole the victim's wife's car and took off - that he fled with his wife Jessica and their infant daughter.

"I am a little angry about it and I hope they catch him," said Jesse Guist, a former roommate and friend of the victim.

Guist says he's been friends with the victim for about 15 years.

"I saw him about a week ago and he was saying that he was having problems with his roommate," said Guist.

He says Ballweg told him that his roommate owed him money and that Ballweg was trying to figure out how to get him out of the house. Police say that roommate was Salinas-Leal. But according to the criminal complaint, the fight wasn't over money - but food. The complaint says the suspect's wife Jessica asked Ballweg for some food Friday night and that Ballweg refused to share. That's when her husband, the suspect, challenged Ballweg to a fight and eventually shot him in the chest.

Guist says he doesn't understand why anyone would want to harm his friend who would go out of his way to help others.

"Anything you needed," said Guist.  "If you needed to eat, he would feed you.  He was just a really kind guy."

Police are asking the public to keep an eye out for a blue 2006 Chevy Uplander with license plate 69157D. If you think you spot the car or the suspect, authorities ask that you call 911

Salinas-Leal is considered armed and dangerous.
