MADISON (WKOW) -- Living a life committed to public service and making a difference behind the scenes. It's the mission of one local man, and this month's Jefferson Award Winner. Elishah Oesch introduces us to Darrell Bazzell.
They're a group of guys who love to get together and play some ball. Lateef Cameron, Rasheed Cameron and the man who's teaching them all the right moves, Darrell Bazzell. Darrell not only plays a good game of basketball, he also plays a vital role in the lives of these two young men.
Lateeff says, "he really tries to be a big part of our lives like someone we can look up to and talk to." Darrell has been the two young men for more than six years, through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. He's also been helping other kids behind the scenes since college.
Darrell says, "My whole career's been about public service both in my work and things I do in the community." Darrell believes his purpose in life is to facilitate change in every way that he can, so are you ready for this....
He's the Vice Chancellor for Administration at U-W Madison and works, "an average day maybe 12 to 14" hours. In addition to that he's also on the board for the Urban League, United Way, President of Gathering Waters, and the current and future President of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County Board.
C.E.O of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County Michael Johnson says,"because of Darrell's leadership and support we have fresh paint, brand new carpets, furniture and a new gym floor."
In fact, the board gave a list of 45 different goals for the year, and thanks to Darrell's leadership, they've achieved all 45. Darrell says, "we've evolved from a place that's safe for kids to a place where they're growing educationally."
Education and a few laughs along the way. When asked about his basketball skills, Lateef says, "He was nice back in the 80's."
But all laughing aside, he's helping these young men and others win the game of life.
Cameron says, "he's taught me to work hard to try to be the best in everything I do and to not settle for less."
