MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- Upon first glance, Natalie Staples blends right in with the rest of the Middleton girls basketball team.
"She really hustles. She's got a big heart and she's out there diving on the floor like anybody else," said Cardinals head coach Jeff Kind.
In fact, the only thing you might notice about Natalie that's any different from her teammates is a black cast on her left arm.
It's a reminder of the day she almost died after rolling an ATV onto her arm, crushing her bones and nearly severing her arm. Doctors were able to reattach the arm, but Natalie's recovery is nothing short of miraculous.
Natalie has played in almost every game for the Cardinals this year, some games more memorable than others.
"It was the first or second game of the season, she made a 3-pointer and it was awesome to have her out there and score that first point," said Kind.
And those special moments aren't just happening on the court.
"For the first time, a couple months ago, I put my hair up by myself. Tears came down, because everyone had to tie my shoes and put my hair up for me, and now I'm getting dressed and doing everything with the team. I'm more independent, which I love," says Natalie.
Her arm still isn't what it used to be, she's got about a year left in her recovery process, but it's clear she's gotten used to her situation.
"I remember being able to play with both hands, but I feel like this is just so natural that I don't get frustrated anymore," says Natalie. "I'm re-learning how to grab the ball, catch the girls' passes, catch and shoot... It's natural again."
Natalie's back to being just another one of the girls on this Middleton team but can certainly appreciate how far she's come.
"I'm so fortunate and blessed that I'm able to come out here and play with these girls. It's just amazing... I'm so thankful. I'm so thankful."
