Obama wants public to push Congress on tax cuts

Posted:

WASHINGTON (WKOW) - President Barack Obama wants help from the American public to push Congress to extend a payroll tax cut. The payroll tax cut will expire at the end of February.

The White House says the average family would lose about $40 per paycheck if the cuts are not renewed. On Tuesday, the president will make a statement at the White House.

People wrote in on social media sites what $40 means to them.

A similar event was held in December at the White House. Congress struggled to prevent the cuts from expiring. A short-term deal was reached to extend the tax cuts for two months.

Negotiations on another extension have faltered, though House Republicans say they are willing to extend cuts through the end of the year.

President Obama will speak Tuesday at 9:40 a.m. in Washington, D.C. Watch it live at www.wkow.com/live.
