Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center discusses child abuse

MADISON (WKOW) -- Police say the 15-year-old child torture victim was taken to Safe Harbor Advocacy Center after her abuse was reported by a concerned citizen.

It was an interview there which led to the arrests of three of her family members.

The center provides a safe place for children to tell their story.

"We provide a safe environment where children come to talk about the things that have happened to them," said Jennifer Ginsburg, a forensic interviewer at Safe Harbor.

Ginsburg said she couldn't discuss the child torture case in particular, but has worked with many child victims of abuse.

"Children are abused everywhere, in every community, in every city and its hard to think that it could happen in our back yard but it can and our job as a community is to protect children and be on the lookout for the children in our community," she said.

The center works with several agencies, including police, to further a child's case. They also refer child victim's to receive trauma treatment.

"The important thing is for them to get to someone who is trained in trauma, in children's trauma, understanding trauma, who can then help the healing begin," said Ginsburg.

She says healing often means therapy, but is a process that moves forward with support and understanding from people around the victim.

Ginsburg said, "Children absolutely can heal and recover and move on to live healthy, productive lives."
