UPDATE: Chicago man arrested after stealing telephone company van

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Chicago man authorities arrested for stealing a van, also faces a substantial battery charge from another incident.

Madison police say a cab driver needed six stitches to his head, following an attack Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect, 21-year-old Denzel Brown, was arrested later in the day for driving a stolen van.

Officials say the 48-year-old cab driver told police that he thought Brown was trying to steal his cab. The cab driver had just finished refueling his car at the company's facility on Cottage Grove Road, when Brown approached him asking for the time.

The cab driver provided the time and was about to get into the driver's seat when he was hit in the head. The driver got in the car. Brown called for him to get out, while the driver was radioing for help. Brown rode off on a bicycle.

Brown later stole a telephone company's van. Dane County Sheriff's deputies later arrested him and issued multiple citations.

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Chicago man has been arrested after stealing a local telephone company's van.

Dane County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call reporting a stolen vehicle in the Town of Dunn just before 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.

A Frontier Telephone employee was outside working on a telephone box at the intersection of CTH AB and CTH MN, when a man on a bicycle approached him. The man, Denzel Brown, asked the employee for directions. Brown then jumped into the Frontier employee's van and drove away.

The victim was picked up by a passerby to follow the stolen van while on the phone with the 911 dispatch center. Deputies found the van and stopped it at CTH AB and Buckeye Road in Madison.

Twenty-one-year-old Brown was arrested for operating a motor vehicle without owner's consent. He was also cited for operating a vehicle without a driver's license.

Brown was booked into the Dane County Jail. An additional charge of substantial battery was added because Brown was wanted by Madison police for a previous incident where he attacked a cab driver.
