BOSTON, Mass. (WKOW) -- Another Kennedy could soon be heading to Congress.
Joseph P. Kennedy III announced Thursday that he plans to run for the seat that will open up when Democratic Congressman Barney Frank retires at the end of his term.
Kennedy plans to run as a Democrat.
Kennedy, the son of former U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy II and a grandson of the late Robert F. Kennedy, recently moved from Cambridge to Brookline, part of the state's newly redrawn 4th Congressional District. Brookline is the birthplace of Kennedy's great-uncle, the late President John F. Kennedy.
He told commuters he's proud of his family's legacy, but knows he has to earn voter support. He cited his late great-uncle Sen. Edward M. Kennedy as an example of how to reach across the aisle.
Kennedy most recently worked as an assistant district attorney in Massachusetts. But he stepped down from the post last month when he announced plans to explore a run.
