UPDATE: Changes to voting for spring primary

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The spring primary is this Tuesday. Officials aren't expecting a big turnout, but it still might take a little longer at the polls.

That's because the voter ID law takes effect this election, along with redistricting. Both bringing some changes to how things are run.

The voter ID law will require all voters to show an acceptable form of identification, and they'll have to sign a poll book. You'll also not be able to vote in your new district, if you've moved within the past 28 days. That's a change from just 10 days before the law.

Dane County's clerk Karen Peters says they'll have extra workers at the polls--greeters who will check to see if you have the proper form of ID. But they still expect long lines this time around.

"Just be a little patient because you know, it is the first time for the workers to go through this," says Peters.

Peters says you can still vote if you don't bring your ID, you'll just have to vote provisionally. That means you'll have to bring a valid ID back to the polls before they close at the end of the day, otherwise your vote won't be counted. It may take a lot longer to fill out the paperwork.

Redistricting could also change where you vote. People whose polling places have changed should have gotten a letter in the mail, but you can call your local municipality if you're not sure where to go.

MADISON (WKOW) -- If you're planning on going to the polls Tuesday for the spring primary, you'll need to remember your ID.

This is the first election where the Wisconsin's new voter ID law is in effect. The new law requires people to show identification and sign the poll book before they're given a ballot.

There are no statewide primaries. Judicial primaries are held in Dane, Kenosha, Menominee-Shawano, Milwaukee, Oneida and Rock County circuit courts. Click here to see if there are primaries for local officials in your area.

The city of Madison sent out a note Monday about a change in the location of one polling place.  The Jefferson on Old Sauk Road will be closed due to a Norovirus outbreak.  Voters will be redirected to Blackhawk Church at 9620 Brader Way.  The change of location will be in effect for Tuesday, February 21, only.
