UPDATE: Sheboygan, Wis. mayor loses job in recall election

Posted:

SHEBOYGAN (WKOW) -- Voters in Sheboygan removed Mayor Bob Ryan from office Tuesday night.

Unofficial results in Tuesday's recall election showed former state Rep. Terry Van Akkeren defeated Ryan by 53 percent to 46 percent with all precincts reporting.

The recall effort against Ryan was largely spurred on by his problems with alcohol, including fallout from a three-day drinking binge in Elkhart Lake last July.

The vote means Van Akkeren will complete the remainder of Ryan's term, which ends in April 2013.

SHEBOYGAN (WKOW) -- The Sheboygan city clerk expects a high turnout for the city's first-ever mayoral recall election, as high as 50 percent.

City clerk Sue Richards ordered 15,000 ballots for Tuesday's election. There are 29,000 eligible voters in the city.

Voters will head to the polls to determine if Mayor Bob Ryan will retain his seat until his current term ends in April 2013. Former state Rep. Terry Van Akkern is running against him.

Recall organizers sought an election mainly because of Ryan's problems with alcohol, including fall out from a three-day drinking binge last summer in Elkhart. Ryan has recognized that he's an alcoholic and says he's sought treatment.

About 4,100 signatures were needed to force a recall. Richards says almost 4,500 confirmed signatures were handed in.
