Report: Cockpit fogging led F-16 off Oshkosh runway

HAMPTON, Va. (WKOW) – According to U.S. Air Force investigators, the reason a fighter plane left a runway after it landed at an Oshkosh airport last summer was due to extreme fogging in the cockpit.

Last summer, the F-16C Falcon was on a training mission to an air show at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, when the F-16C Falcon came to a stop about 300 feet away from the runway in a grass field.

The Air Combat Command Accident Investigation Board in Hampton, Virginia says the aircraft's environmental control system caused the fogging, which obscured the pilot's visual cues. Without those cues, the board says the pilot didn't apply adequate aerobraking. Damage to the plane is estimated at $5.4 million.

The jet and pilot are assigned to the 100th Fighter Squadron, 187th Fighter Wing at Dannelly Field, Alabama.
