Man accused of trying to kill childhood babysitter

BARABOO (WKOW) -- A Baraboo man is accused of trying to kill his childhood babysitter. Authorities say he attacked her with a lamp and a bottle of vodka.

Matthew R. Lucas, 37, is charged with attempted first degree homicide after what police are calling a savage attack on Saturday night.

The 52-year-old victim was left with fractures and cuts to her face and head.

Friends of the victim say the woman hadn't seen Lucas for decades--not since she was his childhood babysitter. But she ran into him Saturday night at a gas station, and invited him to her Baraboo apartment.

It began as a casual night watching a movie and drinking alcohol, until things took a turn.

"In her words, he snapped and began to beat her with a lamp and a nearby bottle of alcohol," says Lt. Rob Sinden with Baraboo Police.

The woman told police that Lucas went into the bathroom, then walked out and hit her--so hard that she was knocked out of her chair.

She says he kicked and threatened her, and told her she was going to die.

"She said she laid there while he was beating her, acting like she was dead so he would stop," says Lynn Perkins, a close friend of the victim.

Police say after it happened, the woman crawled her way from her apartment to the steps of the nearby bar for help. That's where police found her.

Later that night, authorities arrested Lucas at his home. He had blood on his clothes, and told them "I killed someone, I killed someone."

Acquaintances say the woman has a history of abusive fights while drinking.

The victim remains hospitalized in Madison on Wednesday, in fair condition.

As for Lucas, he's being held in Sauk County on a $100-thousand bond. He'll appear in court on March 12th.

BARABOO (WKOW) -- A man is accused of attempting to kill his childhood babysitter, by beating her with a lamp and a bottle of alcohol.

Matthew R. Lucas, 37, appeared in Sauk County court on Monday and is charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

Baraboo Police spokesperson Lt. Rob Sinden says it was a particularly savage beating. The victim told officers the man "just snapped."

Police aren't sure what caused Lucas to attack the 52-year-old woman. According to a criminal complaint, on Saturday night, Lucas kicked her several times, hit her with a vodka bottle, beat her with a lamp and threatened to kill her at her apartment in Baraboo.

The victim told police she met up with Lucas at a gas station, and he offered to help her pack, because she was moving. They began watching a movie at her apartment, when Lucas went into the bathroom and came back out, hitting her so hard with a lamp that hit knocked her out of her chair.

When officers responded, they found Lucas with blood on his clothes, and he told them "I killed someone, I killed someone."

The woman suffered multiple facial fractures, rib fractures and cuts to her head and face.

Lucas is expected to appear in court for a pretrial on the morning of March 12th. He remains in custody, on a $100,000 bond.
