U.S. Senate candidates appear at forum Thursday

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Newspaper Association and Associated Press hosted a U.S. Senate Candidate forum at the Madison Marriott West in Middleton on Thursday afternoon.

Republican candidates Jeff Fitzgerald, Mark Neumann and Tommy Thompson participated in the event.

Each candidate was given time to address the audience, and then answered questions from the moderator,  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel managing editor George Stanley, and other members of the press in attendance.

The main topic of discussion was the national budget. Each candidate said the economy will the focus of their campaigns.

The candidates are running for Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl's seat. Sen. Kohl announced that he would not seek re-election last year.

U.S. Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin is the only Democrat in the race, she could not attend Thursday's forum due to a schedule conflict.
