WHITEWATER (WKOW) -- The UW-Whitewater basketball team is still celebrating after making history with its NCAA Division III championship win.
Fans lined the streets to welcome the UW-Whitewater basketball team after their win in Salem, Virginia.
"Words can't explain… It's excellent," said Quardell Young, a freshman point guard on the team.
They made history after beating Cabrini College. UW-Whitewater is now the first school in its division to have its football and basketball teams win a national championship in the same year.
"When we were in Virginia they kept talking about the football team. We said we'd get the basketball team on the map and we definitely did that," said senior forward Chris Davis.
But most of the players I spoke with said they weren't sure if they were going to get this far at the start of the season.
"We all just built good chemistry and worked together and never gave up on each other," Young said.
"Once we started playing, we were good on defense," Davis said. "Defense wins championships and I guess it shows today."
The Madison native shared the victory with his son.
It's Davis' last year. After getting caught up with the wrong crowd in high school and getting kicked off the basketball team at MATC, he says this is a great way to go out.
"I've been through a lot since 10 years ago. I wouldn't know where I'd be right now so this is definitely a good sign. If you are struggling out there, you can still make it."
