FITCHBURG (WKOW) -- Firefighters in Fitchburg had their hands full Tuesday afternoon with a brush fire.

Crews say it started around 11 a.m. near Big Bluestem Parkway and spread quickly due to the wind.

It didn't threaten any homes, but firefighters did shut down a bike path nearby.

The Fitchburg Fire Department says about 30 to 40 acres burned.

There's no word on how it started.

Firefighters want to remind everyone that the mild and dry winter, coupled with the above normal temperatures and windy conditions, make grassy areas and fields very susceptible to brush fires. Everyone should be particularly careful when discarding any burning or smoldering materials including cigarettes and used charcoal briquettes.
