Man arrested for throwing a stranger's dog

MADISON (WKOW) -- A suspect has been arrested after police say he abused a Madison man's dog.

Madison police say the pet owner contacted them after an incident that happened downtown. The man was walking his 12-year-old dog Malcolm between the 100 block of State Street and the 100 block of West Mifflin Street when he was approached by Joseph R. La Rue, 46, who began petting the dog.

Witnesses told police that friendly behavior ended quickly, when La Rue lifted Malcolm in the air and then threw him down on the pavement. When officers arrived, the owner and the suspect were fighting.

La Rue told officers he picked Malcolm up because the dog looked fat and he wanted to see how much he weighed.

The man was taken to the Dane County Jail, where he was given a breathalyzer test, which showed he had consumed nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol. La Rue faces charges of abusing an animal, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

The dog was injured. The owner told police he was noticeably limping.
