UW-Whitewater baseball team sweeps Ripon

RIPON, Wis. -- UW-Whitewater swept Ripon College Saturday in a pair of games at Francis Field in Ripon 16-3 (7 innings) and 7-6.  The Warhawks are now 9-4 overall and Ripon falls to 6-6.

The Warhawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings in game one.  Six of the runs were scored on base hits, another on an error and another on a sacrifice bunt.

The Red Hawks narrowed the Warhawk lead to 8-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth but UW-W responded with two more runs in the top of the sixth and six in the top of the seventh to force the game to end early due to the run rule.

UW-W's bats were hot in game one with all but one starter recording a hit and six Warhawks recording multiple hits.  Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) went 3-for-5, knocked in four and scored one.  Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker) tallied three RBIs and Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) two.

Kyle Stewart (Onalaska/Onalaska) earned his fourth win of the season, now 4-0, pitching five innings giving up three hits, three runs, three walks, and striking out two.  Quintin Zander (Black Earth/Wisconsin Heights) came on in relief and pitched two innings of scoreless baseball.

Game two was much closer but the Warhawks held the lead the entire game.  The scoring began in the top of the first when Jared Fon (Germantown) tripled in Samuel Keller Jr. (Milwaukee/Riverside).  Herum followed with a single down the right field line that scored Fon and gave the Warhawks a 2-0 lead.

Ripon led off the second inning with a triple by Eric Schumacher who later came around to score on a ground out to bring the score to 2-1 after two.

Fon came up again in the third and this time belted a two run homer to left center and extended the UW-W lead to 4-1.

Another Ripon run in the bottom of the third made it 4-2, but the Warhawks put up another two runs in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2.  In the fifth it was a Herum double that scored Keller and a Friend single that scored Herum to account for the runs.

A run by each team in the sixth made it 7-3. It was Fon again accounting for the Warhawk run with a solo shot to left center.

The Warhawks made things interesting by giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth to make it 7-6, but Matthew Roberts (Manitowoc /Roncalli) slammed the door on a Ripon comeback.  Roberts came in to pitch the final two innings but struck out three batters in his appearance.

Fon contributed four RBIs in game two along with three runs in a 3-for-5 performance.  Aaron Leitner (Chilton/Chilton) earned the win for UW-W pitching five innings, giving up three hits, two runs, two walks, and striking out five.

For the day JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek) drew four walks and scored three runs.  Herum went 5-for-10 in the doubleheader with four RBIs and four runs scored.  Fon went 5-for-7 with five RBIs, seven runs scored, and two walks.  Fon and Herum, along with Friend and Beyer, lead the team with ten RBIs each this season.

The Warhawks will open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with their first home game on April 5.  The Warhawks will take on UW-Oshkosh in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at Miller Stadium's Prucha Field on the campus of UW-Whitewater.
