WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- You can now search your family's history in the 1940 census.
The National Archives and Records Administration posted the census on its website on Monday.
The records are being released under federal law that allows records only to be released after 72 years have passed.
The largest percentage of the population during that time was in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and California.
