CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (WKOW) – A U.S.
Virgin Islands police officer found a newborn baby zipped up in a purse after
pulling over a woman for a traffic violation Tuesday.
According to a police statement, when the officer asked the
St. Croix woman for her license, the officer heard a baby crying, but did not see
a baby seat in the vehicle. The driver then allegedly unzipped a purse in the
seat next to her, revealing a tiny, newborn baby girl.
Police say the driver told them the baby was born at home a
week ago and had no prenatal care. She was apparently driving the infant to a
doctor. Police rushed the newborn to a hospital.
The mother, whose name and ages have not been released yet, may
face criminal charges.
