Gophers LB Gary Tinsley found dead at 22

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota linebacker Gary Tinsley was found dead in his campus apartment Friday morning, university officials said.

Tinsley, 22, was found unresponsive in his apartment at Roy Wilkins Hall on the Minneapolis campus, team spokesman Andy Seeley said. The cause of death wasn't immediately released.

Emergency responders were not able to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead at the scene around 8 a.m., university spokesman Chuck Tombarge said. He said there was no indication of foul play.

Tinsley, who was from Jacksonville, Fla., completed his eligibility at the end of the 2011 season. He played in 44 games during his Gopher career. He was No. 2 in total tackles with 87 stops last season. He compiled 198 total tackles over his career.

Tinsely signed with Minnesota out of First Coast High School in 2008. He played seven games as a freshman in 2008, saw action in each of the Gophers' 13 games in 2009 and started all 12 games in 2010 and 2011. He was a four-year letter-winner.

The athletic department scheduled a Friday afternoon news conference with coach Jerry Kill, senior quarterback MarQueis Gray and university Police Chief Greg Hestness.
