MADISON (WKOW) -- Firefighters say a Madison mail carrier helped put out a fire in an apartment Friday morning.
The fire began on the balcony of a second story apartment at 17 Ridgeview Court. The Madison Fire Department says the fire began after discarded smoking materials were dropped in dried potting soil.
Firefighters say a mail carrier kicked in the door to the apartment and put out the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher.
The fire caused some charring to the attic. Damage is estimated at $10,000.
The tenant was able to return to the apartment and has renters insurance.
