Fire burns at apartment where shooting suspect was held up

MODESTO, Calif. (WKOW) -- A deadly standoff turns into a fire scene in Modesto, California early Friday morning. Firefighters have been keeping some distance away from the fire because of the danger of additional gunfire.

They've had to fight the flames using high-pressure hoses.

Authorities say the fire started after a man accused of killing a deputy and a civilian barricaded himself for hours. The shooting deaths took place after authorities tried to serve an eviction notice at the apartment complex in the central California city.

The gunfire led to a standoff of more than 12 hours. At one point, police broke the windows of the apartment with bean bags, and fired flash grenades and tear gas.

The Modesto Bee quotes the sheriff as acknowledging that the flash grenades and tear gas could have started the fire.

Authorities evacuated some nearby residents, while others remained in their homes.
