Local doctors signing to benefit free clinic

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- This weekend doctors from Dean Clinic and St. Mary's Hospital will put down the stethoscopes and pick up some microphones to raise money for a local free clinic.

The 6th Annual DocStar is set for Saturday, April 21. All proceeds from the evening benefit the Benevolent Specialists Project (BSP) Free Clinic.

The BSP Clinic is located in Middleton and is the only free clinic to offer multi-specialty healthcare in Wisconsin. Since opening in 2001, the clinic has provided free specialty care to more than 10,000 uninsured and medically under-served patients. The clinic is staffed by volunteer physicians and nurses and is completely funded by private donations and donated services from Dean Clinic, Meriter, St. Mary's Hospital, Turville Bay MR & Radiation Oncology Center and UW Health. Several pharmaceutical companies and laboratories also donate services to the clinic. BSP Clinic represents 21 medical specialties and has 40 volunteer physicians.

"Without the volunteer support of area medical professionals, along with financial support from the area community, this clinic would not be able to serve those who depend on the crucial medical services we provide," says BSP Free Clinic Medical Director Tom Hirsch, MD. "The BSP Free Clinic provides vital services to Dane County and the surrounding communities, to the tune of more than $650,000 a year, which in 2011 helped more than 1,500 patients."

Several musical acts will perform at DocStar2012, including:

  • The Go Deans (A group of Dean Clinic-Janesville doctors playing Rock n' Roll)
  • Dr. Ernie Pellegrino (Founder of the BSP Free Clinic, along with others from The Singing Men of Wisconsin)
  • Borborygmi & The Borborygmettes (A group of Dean Clinic Gastroenterologists)
  • Jennie and the Grayman (Contemporary folk duo featuring Dean Clinic's Dr. Jeff Stitgen and his daughter)

In addition to the performances, DocStar 2012 will feature a live and silent auction featuring artwork from area physicians and other members of the local medical community.

The event will be held at Madison Marriott West in Middleton. Tickets are $50.00 and can be purchased by calling 608-827-2314 or by clicking here.
