Mark Chmura joins group suing NFL over concussions

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Former Green Bay Packers tight end Mark Chmura has joined a growing number of former National Football League players who are suing the NFL.

They are alleging their cognitive abilities have declined because of concussions during their playing days.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/JvWceV ) Chmura's suit was filed Friday in federal court in eastern Philadelphia.

The cases, involving hundreds of former players, are expected to be bundled and handled as one.

Other former Packers who have filed suit include Santana Dotson, LeRoy Butler and Dorsey Levens.

Paul Anderson is a law student who has kept tabs on the 61 suits and assorted court filings. He says there are now nearly 1,300 named plaintiffs.

The NFL has maintained the suits are meritless.
